Work Conditioning Programs
Individualized conditioning programs are designed to improve the client’s strength, endurance and tolerances relative to specific job tasks following an injury or when deconditioning has been identified as a barrier to return to work. When possible, simulation of job tasks is incorporated into the program to improve work tolerance, confidence and proficiency.
Components of the Work Conditioning Program:
This program is individualized to include one, or a combination of the following components.
Case Coordination Services:
- The Occupational Therapist liaises with all other involved health professionals to ensure a collaborative and cost effective approach is utilized. Relates pertinent information to the case manager; and consults with the family physician.
Community Based Work Conditioning Program:
- A graded work conditioning program is developed by the Kinesiologist in collaboration with the Occupational Therapist consisting of progressive exercises (weight training, aquatherapy), aerobic conditioning, and work simulation to improve physical conditioning.
- Education is included on relevant areas such as: injury prevention, back care and lifting techniques, energy conservation, stress management and relaxation.
Job Site Analysis:
- To determine specific job demands so that the physical demands can be simulated in the conditioning program if possible.
- To make recommendations on environmental modifications, adaptations and work simplification to that will promote safety and return to work.
Return to Work Support Services:
- Following the conditioning program, a return to work plan is developed including recommendations on modified work duties or a gradual increase in hours.
- Includes regular on-site visits and correspondence with the employer to ensure the program is progressing at a rate suitable for both the employer and employee.
